Honest Mistake or Not???

There was a lady who came in our shop today.  She bought several pretty things.  She gave me the change part of her purchase but not the twenty dollar bill and the ones.  She said that she paid, but she didn't.  Now, I'm very sad because I know how hard everyone works for their money.  It was a touchy situation and I didn't know how to handle it tactfully.  I feel responsible.  I am very sad and also angry to think that it may or may not have been deliberate.

Maybe she will come back tomorrow and pay us.  Maybe she will realize that she made a mistake.   She seemed so nice
and she has been in the shop before.

Maybe she will make it right.  I will be very dissapointed if she
doesn't because I always see the good in everyone.
Maybe, just maybe, she will make it right.
Sorry blogerettes, I just had to get this off my mind.

~~hugs~~

Sorry this happened, Sissie. I do hope it all works out and that it will be cleared up.

Sleep well.

We all want to see the good in people, so I can see why you are frustrated. If she has been in the shop before, she will probably come again and admit to the mistake. Maybe not...then maybe it can just be water under the bridge.

Always feel free to vent. We all have our problems and blogging is about our lives, the good and the bad!

I hate that! I work for a doctor and I always try to keep the cash on the counter as I write the receipt because once in a while someone is dishonest but if she shops regularly maybe she made an error. I hope not one in her judgement. I hope she comes back to pay.

That's too bad, Sissie! I had a money issue come up today with a client that made me sad as well {a little angry, too}. The best thing is to make sure you count out loud the money the next time she is in or as Annesphamily said above, let her put it out on the counter or table. I hope she makes it right for you because you work hard for your money, too!

Oh Sissie , I want to make you smile and not be hurting, angry and sad. It is sad! Well if you see her on the street spit in her eye and kick her in the shin and give her a really dirty grin!

That is a tricky thing to handle. If the woman has been a loyal customer in the past, a paying customer, well I guess than it is better to give the benefit of the doubt, but for the moment it doesn't make you feel any better. I would be stewing too. So let's think good thoughts and all that stuff about Karma....okay? If that doesn't work, than make the banana bread and don't feel guilty about eating the whole loaf, yourself, after all it is just a bunch of bananas, right?

Well, first of all, I LOVE the kitty impersonating Hello Kitty! Too cute! :) I hope the lady comes back in. It is so much easier to believe that it was an honest mistake. Here's hoping!

How sad. I wonder...was she an older lady? Maybe she suffers from dementia and really didn't know. Hope it works out for you.

Oh Sissie....
Let's hope she will be back. From now on, you take what they give you and count it right in front of them. Never turn away from them. Count it right to them. I learned that a long time ago. At the end of the day when you counted back your register were you short that $20.00 and something? Let's just hope that she will find her mistake, and come back and make it right.

I love your hello kitty "Kitty". Is she just not the cutest darn thing? Love it.

Try to have a good day tomorrow. Please know that you are so loved. Country hugs and much love sweetie...Sherry

I'm sorry to hear that you had such kind of a trouble, Sissie! Maybe the lady really thought she had given you the money. I can imagine that with one bill very well but then with a couple of different bills it sounds a bit dubious. Hopefully it will clear up.
Hugs,
Julia

There wasn't much more you could do at that moment.

To prevent it in the future, do not touch the money until it's all there. (keeping your hands busy wrapping/bagging purchases helps). If you are handed change but not the bills, gently set it on the counter while you wait. You might even take a tiny 'spacing' step backwards - a soft cough could be the "reason" for the move.

So sorry it happened. That's a tough place to be.

Oh no, how uncomfortable for you. I do hope things work out. Is it possible she has memory problems and it wasn't deliberate, that could help understand how it happened. I guess if she comes in again you need to have all the money in hand, count it in front of her before you add it to the till.

I just want to tell you your beautiful creations have been a real inspiration in the new venture my family and I are trying. You have such wonderful and creative ideas! We can't help but be inspired!

My husband and I had a garage sale once and the lady tried that. She said that she gave us the money, but she didn't. That was many years ago, and we haven't had a garage sale since. I have one important question, where did you get the outfit for your cat? Iwant one like that SO bad for my darling kitty "squish". Thanks

You poor Lovely, I hope and pray that she also realizes she made a mistake and comes back to pay you whats owed.
You have a beautiful heart Sissie, and I hope that this doesn't change you from believing the best in people.
hugs to you

Oh Sissie,
This is not good and I'm sure you are feeling it.. I do hope it works out and she realizes she made a mistake. I know sometimes I do the craziest things... by the way was she old enough to be going through menopause? Anyways with me reading all this I have to say I was very much distracted to say the least admiring that darling princess kitty. he he Now that would of been nice for Pink Saturday... how precious!

Oh Sissie, sorry to hear that. These things seem to happen now and then and that is so sad. Maybe the lady will see later that she is mistaken and come back.

Sissie, that happened to me once also when i had a garage sale...my gal had "bought" quite a few things and was making to leave when i told her that she hadn't paid...she insisted she did pay...so i insisted more strongly that she hadn't...she did pay me then, and all was well...i hope this will work out for you also...i love your sweet kitty!!!

That's to bad...but to keep up the good spirit and hopes: give her the benefit of doubt and bless her...and just go on happily? This will set you free from the dissapointment.

Yesterday I witnessed a shoplifting: a man stole a dvd right under my eyes. And the stupid thing was; the dvd was on sale too! People like this are very sick in the mind... Nevertheless I did warn the shop owner but the man already had left the shop and they couldn't find him anymore....Such is life ey? Anyway, the point is: I also felt bad but then I thought: I won't let him spoil my day and when happilier on my way again...

People Who Know Me Would Say: said...

Oh boy. I'd have to get it off my chest too.

The only thing I can suggest is that you make her lay her money down on the counter when she comes back in and not in your hand from now on.

Don't let it hang over you like a dark cloud. She's not worth it.

Sissie, I'm sorry that happened to you. I can just imagine the awkwardness as she insisted she paid when you both knew she hadn't. You did the right thing; hopefully, her conscience will bother her, but I don't know. Well, she has to live with herself.

Claudia said...

Oh, these situations are awkward, aren't they? I've had to make change before in a shop - counting the cash out loud in front of the client helps. (I found that out the hard way!)

That being said, I think you handled it perfectly, Sissie. If she is a regular customer, it seems as if she made an honest mistake. Hopefully, she will realize that. Seeing the best in everyone helps to bring out the best in everyone.

I use to own a retail store and this happened to me twice. Then, I managed a stationer's store (like a Hallmark) and it happened several times again. I got very good at keeping the money on TOP of the register and not putting their cash in the drawer until the entire transaction was completed.

I'd give this gal the benefit of the doubt but I sure would be watching her next time she came in.

Oh how sad! I am hoping she returns today. My parents owned their own business and all employees were never to put the money in the cash regisiter until sale was final, that way it is lying there on top and can be shown to customer immediately. Love the kitty pic!

Whew..sure hope she comes back to make things right. Sure sorry this happened to you Sissie.

Mollye said...

Well people just don't always act like we'd have them act do they.

Either whe will realize her mistake and come in and make it right.

Or she suffers from an inflated ego who thinks she is above making a mistake.

Or you will never see the chick again.

Anywho ........ just another example that we have no control over anyone but ourselves.

Hugs, Mollye

Man, sorry Sissie-pooh! We have all been there, and sometimes these things are honest misktakes, and sometimes they are done on purpose. I hope she didn't do this to you guys on purpose, but if she did, I really hope that her conscience tears her up about it and she does the right thing. Good luck with this situation, I would hate to be in your shoes. That really is a sucky feeling.

On a brighter note- you could be having a worse day- just look at that poor cat, uh, I mean Miss Kitty! lol

Hi sweet Sissie,

This is one of the worst sitiations, when having a shop, and I understand you being so angry.
It is not long ago someone directly stole something hanging outside my shop. So I think we all tryed something like that, in one way or the other.I was also so angry, and sad, and this person, just walked away with a beautifull decorated iron candle hanger. I`m still hurt when thinking about it.
Sissie I so hope you will get your money sweet, I feel with you, and know how awfull this is.
Hugs to you,
Dorthe

The best thing to do would have been to both agree to disagree & let you till count at night determine who owed who. If she respects you & your business she would have agreed to wait & see. Just realize you did the best you could with the situation at the moment.

Sissie,
This is sad. I hope she did not do it on purpose. People just don't have the entegrity like they used to. If she doesn't come back.... perhaps there is a way you can make sure it doesn't happen again. Give it up to God... he will balance it all out in the end.

I love your post about the ruffles. they are everywhere aren't they? and I love them!

Blessings and hugs!
Gwen
