Drawn to pretty things...

Do you ever wonder why you are drawn to certain things.  Why you like collecting them or why you just can't resist buying them.
I'm this way with pretty vintage slips and gowns.

Our Moms and Grandmoms wouldn't be caught dead without a slip underneath their dress.
Lacy pinks, whites, creams....some with side slits, zippered...
Labels like Shadowline, Maidenform, Vanity Fair, Vassarett...

I remember watching my Mom sit in front of her vanity wearing her slip and putting on her makeup...

Slip fact:  Slips were made of rayon during the 1940's.  Because of the war rayon was the only fabric available.  It wasn't until later that nylon was used.

Feminine, glamorous and so very girlie...

How about you...do you still wear a slip????

                                              ~~hugs~~

  1. I wish I had lived during the fifties. I feel like women dressed so classy then. Gloves, pillbox hats, etc. Love that time period!

  7. This took me back to memories of my mother in her pretty slips, my aunts in theirs getting ready in my bedroom when they visited and were given my bedroom because it had a small half bath. Slips were indeed as pretty then as any lingerie dress today, little rosebuds embroidered, all those tucks, and lace encrusted.

When I was pregnant with my first two children I always wore my prettiest slip to visit my doctor! You just did in those days. And of course we were always told to wear nice lingerie in case you were in an automobile accident. Every birthday or Christmas Day was likely to bring you a box with a pretty slip in it and were the first choice when you visited the lingerie counter for a gift for your own mother. They were pulled out from beneath the counter folded and then shook out across the glass counter for you to admire and choose from.

Any girl walking down the street with the sun shining through her skirt revealing that she wore no slip was considered, well, at the very least, fast.

Delightful memories and I bet there are many of these beautiful creations still available at thrift stores. Such a sweet post that brought back these forgotten memories!

  8. Your post brought back memories, especially after reading the responses of your readers. My mother had a dressing table with a huge moon mirror. So did my grandmother. I wear a slip only when I wear something transparent. Otherwise, I don't. Especially in the summer, it can be very warm to do so. You might be surprised to know that I like to wear one around the house but only in the summer. I love them and I still buy them from time to time.

  9. Hi Sissie Sweetie...
This ole country gal still wears her Vassarette and Maidenform slips.I can't imagine not wearing one under my dresses. They flow so much prettier. I love the patterns, the colors, the little bows, the details, yes the details.

I too, can remember seeing Momma in her slip getting ready for work, or on Sunday for church, what a lovely memory. She always looked so beautiful through my child eyes, and today she is absolutely gorgeous in my mature heart.

Thank you for taking me along on this memory today. I so enjoyed myself. I have been away from blogging since Raja passed, but I have finally found my mojo again. Have a glorious weekend. Many hugs and much love, Sherry

Yes, there is definately something about these pretty slips. I had bought some at the thrift shop, with the intention of selling them on e-bay. I still have them, and can't bear to part with them. so pretty and feminine.
